SPECIALIST PROGRAMS
Visual Arts
The students participate in one hour weekly session in the art room. The program combines a thematic approach usually based on classroom themes with the development of the student’s skills and knowledge of materials.
The aim is to create an atmosphere in which students are able to develop self esteem to gain enjoyment and satisfaction in the production of their art work. Individuality is encouraged and students are given opportunities to explore a variety of media and develop skills in drawing, painting, modelling, threads and textiles and construction.
Students are taught the correct use of tools, equipment and materials and are given basic instruction in techniques.
Music
All students participate in a 30 minute weekly music session and all students take part in a concert each year.
Additional private lessons are also offered by outside service providers during school times. Please see information under the ‘For Parents’ tab for more information.
Physical Education
The students at MPPS participate in a one hour weekly PE session each week with Level 3 and Level 4 students having an additional hour of sport each week. Within these lessons the areas covered are gymnastics, dance, major games, minor games, athletics, ball handling skills, outdoor adventure activities and fundamental motor skills.
Swimming is also part of the PE program and the school runs programs from Prep – Grade 6 with all children being offered swimming lessons every year at MSAC.
MPPS has been involved in an exemplary sports program along with other schools in the City of Port Phillip and Stonington for several years. It is aimed predominately at students in Level 4, however students in Level 3 play both netball and basketball at an inter-school level. This sports program is designed to introduce all students to a variety of sports and provide them with a wide selection of choices from which to adopt a leisure time sporting activity. The students have two clinics conducted by experts in the field, followed up by additional skills and practice and game sessions during PE lessons.
The culmination of the process is a ‘gala day’ at which the local schools get together and play a Round Robin tournament. It is a highly successful program and the students thoroughly enjoy it. Sports to which students have been introduced include swimming, athletics, cross country running, touch football, hockey, netball, basketball and AFL.
Information Technology
MPPS provides all students with access to a specialist program operating in the computer lab as well as networked computers in each classroom. All students from Level 1 to Level 4 attend a weekly IT session with a specialist teacher in the computer lab.
